Historical steps in Cannon Hill Park

To mark the re-opening of Midlands Arts Centre, Cannon Hill Park is offering the public a chance to immerse themselves in a weekend of history and discovery with two special events, 'A Voice in the Park' and 'Forward into History' March 6-7.

Starting from 11am on Saturday 6 March, A Voice in the Park will ask people to share and record their thoughts and memories of the park for Amplifying the Map, a creative audio project created by artists Kate Chapman, Charlotte Goodwin and Nina West.

People will be asked to re-discover walks into parts of the park that are rarely visited. The event will add to the already increasing range of distinctive audio trails, which include an audio adventure created by children at Tindal School, Birmingham.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said: "With the reopening of the iconic Midlands Art Centre in Cannon Hill Park these two great activities are part of our city's great cultural assets. Birmingham is truly a big city of culture."

March 7, the Rangers and Friends of Cannon Hill Park will step Forward into History and introduce visitors to the park's former landowner Miss Louisa Ryland, and the designer who transformed the site, John Gibson.

The walk will take people past the lakes, the 'students' (Cannon Hill's vast plant collection), the old mill industry along the Rea and the various memorial sites. People will be able to share stories and relive the park's history and its key historic events.

For information about these two events, call Cannon Hill Park's visitor centre on 0121 442 4226.
